Sioux Lookout Flyers pick up win, looking
for support
from community
Sioux
Lookout Bulletin - Tim Brody - January 25, 2012

THE Sioux Lookout
Flyers are back in the win column.
On January 17
the Flyers were back in Sioux Lookout in front of
their hometown fans after a tough three week road trip,
looking to snap a nine game winless skid, which they did,
edging the visiting Dryden Ice Dogs 4 – 3.
The Flyers had
to come from behind for the win after falling behind 2 –
1 after one period of play. Both teams tested each
other often during a scoreless second period before Sioux
Lookout took it up a notch in the third period scoring
three goals to the Ice Dogs’ one. Chris Hoffman,
who has been an offensive power for the Flyers, had two of
the Flyers goals and assisted on a third scored by Dane
Morin. Anthony Bonner had the fourth Flyers goal. Jayme
Brattengeier turned in another stellar performance between
the pipes stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced. Hoffman
and Brattengeier were named the game’s top two stars.
Head Coach/GM Brad Zangs commented on the win, following
the team’s long, hard stretch on the road, “To be
honest with you, I think the boys are relieved. I’m
relieved.
It’s one of
those things where you think, thank God we finally won.
The boys battled hard the whole night and I think they
were just fired up to be home and in front of our crowd.
It kind of stunk because we were on the road for such a
long time but I think the kids were excited.”
Zangs said the
impact a full house of fans has on his team when playing
in Sioux Lookout is amazing. “In this barn you know that
whether there are 200 or 500 or 1000 people in this place
when it’s loud you can feel the energy over on the bench
and when we scored a goal you could just tell that people
were excited and then we scored again and people got more
excited and it really gives you goose bumps and makes you
want to play harder and dig down and I think the boys did
that for the fans.”
Zangs shared a
bit about what being on the road is like. “You’re
getting in at three in the morning and then you’ve got
practise that afternoon so it’s been a trying tough
thing but I think it will be good for the players down the
road. What I mean by that is that when we get into
play-offs and we have to be on the road we’ll be better
for it. I think the boys, they’re just happy this long
road trip is done.” Zangs pointed out that with the
exception of one or two games, his team was within a point
or two of winning each of the nine games they lost. “You
have to take your hats off to the boys. They worked hard
and it was a long month. They stayed in and they battled.
There were
games we could have won but you have to create bounces for
yourself and when you’re playing an away rink sometimes
you don’t get those bounces and when we were home, we
did get those bounces and the puck went our way.”
Commenting on Chris Hoffman’s play, Zangs shared, “He’s
on a roll right now. When he scored a goal against Dryden
it was a hard shot and then it kind of trickled in. Right
now for Hoff it’s going his way.” Zangs also praised
his starting goalie Brattengeier. “I think he’s done
an excellent job as our number one goaltender and I can’t
be any happier.”
The Flyers
play their next five games at home in Sioux Lookout and
Zangs said he and the boys are looking forward to the home
stay. Asked what fans can expect from their team over the
rest of the season Zangs said, “We’re going to stay
positive and buckle down and get ready for playoffs.
We think we
can be a .500 club and that’s the goal right now, to
take a lot of momentum into the play-offs. Play-offs are a
second season and anything can happen.” Zangs praised
his players, staff and team volunteers and billet parents
for everything they have done for the club so far this
season. Club President Mitch Wills said it’s been a year
of ups and downs for the team.
“It has been
a struggle throughout the year financially. We’ve had to
ask some of the boys to help pay their billets as part of
our plan to finish the year. Part of why it’s been a
struggle is there have been a few sponsorships that didn’t
come through. We decided to go through and finish the year
and one of the things we want to get out there is that
there are still opportunities out there for sponsorship.
The easiest
way for the general public to support the team is at the
gate buying a ticket.” Average game attendance in Sioux
Lookout has been a little over 200 people and Wills said
getting those numbers up to 300 or 400 fans a game would
be a great help.
“I think
this year’s team is more talented, a faster team. The
skill set of the players has increased dramatically and we
can compete with every team in the league,” Wills said.
“I think we’re going to be competitive for the rest of
the year. We’ve given the players and coach a vote of
confidence and are looking forward to the play-offs in
March.” Wills said working on special teams will be a
priority for the club.
The mayor’s
attendance challenge between the Flyers and Ice Dogs has
been announced and Wills is asking the community to pack
the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena on Tuesday, February 14
at 7:30 p.m. Dryden residents will try to outdo the
efforts of their Sioux Lookout neighbours the following
evening in Dryden. More than 700 people attended last year’s
challenge in Sioux Lookout.
This Saturday
the Flyers are partnering with the Sioux Snipers women’s
hockey team to host the 100 years of hometown hockey
social at the Legion starting at 8 p.m. The event requires
age of majority. Tickets are available from Wills at
737-0758 or Michelle Beaulne at 737-1038 or at Bloomin’
Wild Flowers. The team plans to hold a pulled pork
sandwich supper at 5:30 p.m. at the Legion January 27 and
plans to continue its fundraising efforts in the off
season with Jimmy Roy working with them on a possible golf
tournament. Looking forward to next season Wills said, “The
plan for next year is we want to continue. But we have to
look at every possibility out there. Come the spring we’ll
be asking our sponsors if they’ll still be involved with
the program.” As for the rest of this season he said the
goal of the team is to break even. “That’s our goal
this year and we’re on track to make it.”

The Flyers didn’t
solve all their issues in Tuesday night’s 4-3 victory
over the Dryden Ice Dogs, in front of 315 at Sioux Lookout
Memorial Arena, but at least they provided themselves with
something of a road map.

For the most part, what they did against the Ice Dogs
after the eight minute mark in the third goal. Control the
puck, use their speed and play smart.
The Flyers show their new confidence in the showcase
weekend in Duluth. All seven teams will converge on Duluth
for what should prove to be an exciting weekend of hockey
for fans. All games will count towards the regular season
standings, and with only a month left in the season, there
should be some great competition as teams jostle for
playoff position. Also attending the event will be college
and professional scouts and coaches. They will see quality
Junior A players vying for an opportunity to move on to
the next step of their playing careers.
Flyers Snap
Nine-Game Skid, 4-3 Over Ice Dogs
Sioux Lookout,
Jan.17,
2012
Sioux Lookout – And
the streak, thank heavens, is finally over.
With the help of two goals by
Chris Hoffman and the game winner by Anthony
Bonner with 2:54 left in the third , the Sioux Lookout Flyers snapped a nine-game
losing streak with a triumphant 4-3 victory over the
visiting Dryden Ice Dogs at the Memorial Arena.
The Team has been working
really hard the last little while and not getting
results. Tonight it felt like the group put together a
full 60-minute effort and were rewarded for it. 315 fan
cheered on the team after a long-awaited victory for Sioux
Lookout. Flyers
will try to start a winning streak when they battle the
Duluth Clydesdales, at the Showcase weekend in Duluth.

Topped by Dogs in 4-3 Road Loss
Dryden, Jan.14,
2012
Its the third time in five games, Sioux Lookout was the
team to score first when Chris Hoffman lit the lamp 4:59
into regulation. The early lead would evaporate later in
the opening period though, as the Dogs scored a 16:59 to
tie the game. With three goals in the second period Dryden
to jump in front for good on the night. A late search was
not enough. Off all the defeats the Flyers have endured
during this difficult month-long stretch, perhaps none
were as heartbreaking as the one they suffered Saturday
night against the Ice Dogs.
Trevor Zangs stopped 37-of-41 shots in his 10th SIJHL
appearance.

of ten meetings this season -- this is the start of a
home-and-home for the Dogs and the Flyers. Each team has
won three games so fare. Flyers won one game on the road
so did Dryden. The Flyers returning home after tonight’s
game and an eight-game road trip, the Flyers were shut out
for the third time in eight games, 7-0 by the Stars on
Wednesday in Thunder Bay. They've lost five of five to
begin the new year after a 3-4 month of December, and the
slump has already worn thin on the team. Ten points
separate Sioux Lookout and Dryden in the standing and if
the Flyers want to get back in the race for third place
tonight would be good starting point.

Flyers
can't reach the Stars, 7-0
Thunder
Bay Jan 11, 2012– A rough opening 20 minutes left the Flyers in a
hole they never climbed out of.
Flyers seemed overmatched from the start, getting outshot
10-6 in the first period of play with a short bench due to
suspensions and the flu. The Flyers were down by two
goals, scored by Quinn Rempel and Matt Kaarela in a 50
second span, after 20 minutes though.
In the second period, the North Stars again held a large
shot advantage over the Flyers. Thunder Bay also padded
its lead, with four goals.
Trevor Zangs started the third period in
goal for the Flyers and both teams settled down and the
final score was 7:0.
Playing
on the road has been notoriously difficult for Sioux
Lookout, eighth straight defeat for the Flyers, who have
won once in their last 9.

SIJHL -
December 14,
2011
Sioux Lookout’s only
game of the week goes Wednesday at Thunder Bay. It’s the
beginning of eight straight on the road for the club. The
Flyers are only five wins short of matching franchise
record for wins in a season at 20.
The team has three skaters among the top 10 in SIJHL
scoring. Anthony Wolfe (13g-23a-36pts) is sixth, Dane
Morin (10g-23a-33pts) is seventh and Chris Hoffman
(18g-12a-30pts) is tied for 10th.
The Flyers have have jumped to fifth on the penalty kill
(81.18%). The seven shorthanded goals they have scored so
far are the second most in the league.
Flyers
grounded by Ironheads, 7:4
December 10,
2011
It was a game that had all the makings of a great battle.
But the Ironheads did what they do, and the Flyers fell
flat in the second of back-to-back games.
Trevor
Zangs started in net, stopping 13 of 18 shots for the
Flyers, while Jayme
Brattengeier came in relief just one minute in the
second period, stopping 17 shots he faced.
The Flyers scored twice on the powerplay on seven
opportunities and did not allow a goal shorthanded, but
scored their 7 goal of the season been one man short.
The Flyers will look to quickly forget this 7-4 loss to
the Iron Range Ironheads and prepare for the up coming contests.
The next game for the Flyers comes Wednesday night in
Thunder Bay when they visit the Thunder Bay North
Stars.

December will be key
December 3,
2011
The Sioux Lookout Flyers think December will be a key
month for their season. If so, they have to like how it
started.
Sioux Lookout (13-12-4) opened December with a 4:3 win
over Dryden on Friday. Brad Wur scored the game winner in
the third period and Jayme Brattengeier recorded 33 saves
for his 10 win of the season.
This is a month that the Flyers can really use this time
to develop a lot of different things because come January,
February, March, the team need to really know exactly what
there're doing, where they're going and how they are going
to get there.
Having concluded a four-game homestand, the Flyers head
back on the road for two against the Ice Dogs. This is the
first visit to Dryden this season. The Flyers are 7-3-1 on
the road this season and collecting 15 points in eleven
games away from home.

Brattengeier
SIJHL Player of the week
In two starts
last week the 19-year-old native of Nipigon, Ont., allowed
only one even-strength goal against and a solid .952 save
percentage helping the Flyers continue their push towards
third place in the SIJHL standings.
He began by turning aside 29 of 30 shots he faced in
hard-luck1-0 setback at Thunder Bay Wednesday and followed
that up with a 31-save performance Saturday backstopping
Sioux Lookout to 6-2 road victory over the North Stars.
|
With his
efforts Brattengeier now shares second spot in the
league in wins with nine and also jumped into a tie
for third overall in save percentage at .916 while
logging more minutes than any other goaltender in
the SIJHL at just under 1,067. |

THUNDER
BAY, Ont. – A
Brandon Wolframe power play goal with 8:09 remaining
proved to be the only tally of the night as the Thunder
Bay North Stars blanked Sioux Lookout Flyers 1-0 Wednesday
evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League
action at the Fort William Gardens.
Neither
Thunder Bay’s Marc Nother nor Sioux Lookout’s Jayme
Brattengeier would allow any pucks to get past them in
their respective team nets through the first two periods
in the tight-checking affair.
The
lone marker would come just as a Flyers’ penalty was
expiring when Kyle Breukelman’s low shot from the left
point was poked at by Travis Tilley before Wolframe jammed
home the loose puck for the game’s lone marker from the
top of the crease.
With
the victory Thunder Bay takes sole possession of third
place in the SIJHL standings moving to 25 points, two
ahead of Sioux Lookout.
Nother
would make 14 saves in all on the night lowering his
league-best goals-against average to 1.61 while
Brattengeier made 29 stops in a hard-luck defeat.
