NORTH STARS-4 FLYERS-0
EMERY STANDS HIS GROUND

March 21, 2010,   M. Morin, Staff Writer

For the first two periods Flyers net minder Peter Emery and the defensive crew, limited the powerful Fort William offense to only one goal. The Sioux Lookout penalty killing unit was solid neutralizing many infractions including a five on three disadvantage. However the North Star’s attack found its mark in the final frame lighting the lamp three more times.

Flyer’s goal tender Peter Emery was in the zone in the opening stanza making saves low, flashing the leather, and going post to post registering nineteen impressive stops. With the North Stars on the power play Fort William sniper Eli Halcrow opened the scoring as he received a cross ice pass from Dustin Fummerton at the 12:08 mark. The Flyer’s special teams did a good job during the first period killing off four of five Fort William power plays. Sioux Lookout defenseman Kalan Ewald was solid defensively winning  puck battles in the corner and working hard in the Flyers zone. Score 1-0  North Stars after one period.

In the early stages of the second period Flyers forward Nathan Brown slammed into Fort William super star Ryan Magill sending him airborne in a memorable hit that drew a roar of approval from the hometown crowd. Following Brown’s lead Colten Brulé stepped up with a body check of his own in what was becoming a feisty middle period of play between these two teams. Continuing his inspired play Nathan Brown threatened to tie the game on a wraparound but North Stars goal tender Guillaume Piché was up to the task making the save.

Following a good defensive play by Kalan Ewald, blue liner A.J. Wensley displayed courage diving to the ice to block a hard shot by the North Stars. Sioux Lookout goal tender Peter Emery came up big making repeated saves with the North Stars trying to jam in the rebound. Clayton Lewis played well  winning puck battles and dishing out a hit. Hard working Sioux Lookout forward Nelson Rosiak had a good second period winning a face off and being a physical presence.

Veteran Flyers sniper Galen Matyjanka was skating hard and driving to the net in the second half of the period in an effort to earn the tying goal for the home team. Sioux Lookout’s penalty killing was sharp denying two North Star  man advantages they faced in the period to keep the score at 1-0 Fort William after two periods of play. The Flyers began the third period with a save by Peter Emery on a drive from the circle by Ryan Pearson but it was not long before the North Stars kicked it into top gear.

At the 1:54 mark Travis Savard snapped  a shot into the top corner from the slot to give Fort William a 2-0 lead. He was assisted on the play by Dan Usiski and Casey Dean. Sioux Lookout responded with  glove saves by Peter Emery on skilled forward Eli Halcrow and defenseman Ryan Axsom as well as a rush by star blue liner Clayton Lewis. With A.J. Wensley in the sin bin for boarding at the 6:24 mark the North Stars went on the power play. The Flyers worked hard to kill off the infraction with solid play by Clayton Lewis and Darren Turner but Fort William hit pay dirt with Ryan Pearson putting in a wrister from the circle giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The North Stars made it a 4-0 game when Jordan Davis turned on the red light seconds after Emery was run into and knocked to the ice. Fort William ran into penalty trouble in the latter half of the period being down two men for 1:08 with Eli Halcrow and  Guillaume Piché both taking penalties. Alex Beaulne, Adam Wensley, and Clayton Lewis all were gunning to get the Flyers on the board with each getting a shot on goal but the North Stars killed off the infractions.

Looking for his second goal of the night Fort William sharp shooter Travis Savard was stopped by Flyers net minder Peter Emery with 1:44 left in the third frame. Final score North Stars-4 Flyers-0. Sioux Lookout goal tender Peter Emery had an excellent performance making 47 saves during the game.

The Flyers will now regroup and get ready to leave it all on the ice in game four of the series to keep their season alive.

Flyers nearly successful in come from behind bid
Tim Brody, ASSOCIATE EDITOR  - Volume 19, No. 20

THE Sioux Lookout Flyers will faceoff against the Fort William North Stars in round two of the SIJHL play-offs.
The Flyers will be keen to put to good use the experience they gained in round one of the play-offs which saw them go zero for four.
The Flyers began their play-off run with losses to the Dryden Ice Dogs and the Fort William North Stars on those teams’ home rinks.
On March 10 the Flyers welcomed the North Stars to Sioux Lookout, where they fell to the visiting North Stars 4–2.

The Flyers took on the Dryden Ice Dogs at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena Saturday night and came just short of the win after an impressive comeback.
The game was a physical contest the whole way through with the Ice Dogs in control during the first half of the game and the Flyers shifting momentum in their favour in the second half of the game.
Both teams came out firing and had chances to score but the Flyers ran into a hot goalie in the Ice Dogs’ Curtis Barker and at the end of 20 minutes the Ice Dogs were ahead 2 – 0.
Dryden picked up in the second period right where they’d left off in the first period adding two more goals to their tally to bring the score to 4 – 0 in their favor.
But then momentum shifted.
At about the halfway point of the period Dwight Lee found a chink in Barker’s thus far impenetrable armour to get the Flyers on the board.
With about four minutes left to play Adam Wensley lit the lamp and all of a sudden the Flyers had halved the Ice Dogs lead bringing the period to a close with Dryden up 4– 2.
The Ice Dogs outshot the Flyers nearly successful in come from behind bid Flyers 12 to 5 in the first period, but the Flyers turned the tables, outshooting the Ice Dogs 12 to 5 in the second period.
The Ice Dogs padded their lead about eight minutes into the third period to make the score 5 – 2.
The Flyers continued to gain ground however and wouldn’t say die with A.J. Wensley scoring near the halfway point in the period to make the score 5 – 3 and bring the fans solidly back into the game.
Adam Wensley scored his second goal of the game to make the score 5 – 4 and Sioux Lookout’s Alex Beaulne scored the tying goal with about six minutes left to play, driving the crowd wild.
BJ McClellan found the back of the net for the Ice Dogs with about four minutes left to regain the lead for his team 6 – 5.
The Flyers pulled their goalie in the dying minute of the game but just weren’t able to score the equalizer.
The 6 – 5 win put Dryden in first place after the first round of the play-offs giving them their choice of opponent in the second round. They elected to face the Fort Frances Lakers.
Flyers Head Coach/GM Randy Lulashnyk stated after the game, “We ran into a couple penalty troubles early… It was four nothing and the guys still pushed themselves to the limit to tie it up 5 – 5. They did a heck of a job… The guys worked hard and I was very proud of them.”
At the time, not knowing who his team would face next in the play-offs, Lulashnyk said he really had no preference. “We know we have to play game in and game out the way we played today.”
Lulashnyk said he felt the first four games of the play-offs were great experience builders for his team in play-off hockey and they need to apply that experience to what they’ve learned all year to do well in the next round.
Lulashnyk said fan support played a big part in helping the team in their come from behind attempt. “It’s great to have fan support. The team draws strength from that.
They’re the seventh man. The bench just gets going because they’re playing for someone.”
Lulashnyk added, “It was good to see Alex Beaulne get that goal today, a timely goal. I just had a feeling the way he was playing if I threw him out there… and the rebound was there and he just popped it in. Guys like Matyjanka are taking it to the next level. Brad Bienvenu really working hard through the checks and not giving up zone, things like that you notice.
Young (Nelson) Rosiak did a great job in the last two games, determined and that’s what play-offs are about, determination, playing through the pain.
That’s what makes you a winner.” Flyers Game Day Manager Les Wills explained how the second round of the play-offs will work. “Now we go into the second round where there will be four teams instead of five teams and the two teams that come out of that best of seven round will then play-off in the final. Whoever comes out the winner of that will go on to the Dudley Hewitt Cup which is the provincial championship.”
Wills commented, “We’re hoping to fill the stands. We’re going to be trying something new the next round and that is we’re going to have a competition. People will be able to buy tickets for $10 and we’ll pick three tickets each game and those three people who get picked will get a chance to shoot from the centre line at the net with a hole in a board covering the net and the winner takes half the take.”
The first two games in the Flyers versus North Stars best of seven series will take place in Thunder Bay March 16 and 17.
The Flyers will then face the North Stars at home for games three and four March 21 at 8 p.m. and 22 at 7:30 p.m. Information on games six and seven, if necessary, has yet to be announced. Game five, if needed, will take place in Sioux Lookout March 26 at 8 p.m.

Sioux Lookout Looking Good
By Nathan White  - The Hockey News  - March 15, 2010/Vol.63 No. 20

The Sioux Lookout Flyers have a new outlook on their SIJHL
future, The expansion team nearly folded last season after the
owner quit and a replacement coach was linked to convicted
murderer Karla Homolka. The Flyers ended up with more
coaches (3) than wins (2), but a volunteer committee kept the
team alive. "We filled the roster with guys who had no business
playing in Jr.A on more nights than one." said returnee Ian
Alcock. "It's been night and day compared to last year, but we
try not to compare.... it's not something we want to think about"

ICE DOGS 6  FLYERS 5
IMPRESSIVE COMEBACK STORY

March 13, 2010   M. Morin, Staff Writer

True to the fans and themselves, the Sioux Lookout Flyers left it all on the ice at the Memorial Arena Saturday night in a 6-5 offensive slugfest with their regional rivals the Dryden Ice Dogs.  Dwight Lee assisted by Ian Alcock and Darren Turner put a dent in the Dryden puck passing parade with a pretty top shelf goal at the 9:56 mark of the second period to the roar of  Sioux’s faithful. It would open the gates to some great individual and Team performances. The Flyer’s gritty comeback creates momentum in the improving round robin performance of the hometown squad.

A fast skating, hard hitting game developed from the start as local stalwart Ian Alcock screamed into the corner of the Dryden zone winning the battle for the puck resulting in shots on net by Clayton Lewis, and Troy Dumais.  Similarly Shayne Kakegamic, who had one of his best games of the season, dug the puck out of the corner resulting in a Darnell Ferland blast on the net. A. J. Wensley’s long pass to Galen Matyjanka resulted in another scoring opportunity. Successive hits by Clayton Lewis, Nathan Brown and a crunching hit along the boards by Mike Delvecchio, left no doubt as to the Flyer’s resolve.

Dryden opened the scoring at 9:44 of the first as Kevin Burton called for the pass from behind the net. His quick shot squeezed through Flyer’s Goal Tender Peter Emery. He was assisted on the play by Mike Lennon and Kyle Heck. Flyers counter attacked as A.J. Wensley hit Logan McDonell with a pass. Shot on net. Save Curtis Barker.

Flyer’s Special Teams excelled on the PK as Adam Wensley went to the sin bin for slashing at 6:47.  A.J. Wensley gained possession and cleared twice.  Dryden’s relentless attack was slowed as Clayton Lewis put a massive check on Kevin Burton.  This was quickly followed by a hit by Nathan Brown making the Ice Dogs pay the price.  Capping a good kill by the Flyers, Galen Matyjanka won a battle for the puck along the boards and cleared it safely out of the zone.

Undaunted the Ice Dog’s precise passing attack continued. Flyer’s Captain Logan McDonell stepped into Chad Liley in the high slot, but the Dogs would regain possession. With 3:39 remaining in the first period  Dryden’s #19 Ben McClellan scored on Flyer’s net minder Peter Emery, assisted by the aforementioned Liley on another passing play from behind the net.  Emotions flared after the buzzer, as Logan McDonell would respond physically to words by Will Kinsman.  The exchange would prove costly.

The second stanza began with the Flyers on a four minute 5 on 4 disadvantage.  Gretzky’s office would prove dangerous to the Flyers once more. The disk originated from behind the net.  Frustratingly it just seemed to lie there before Dryden’s #7 B.J. McClellan batted in for the visitor’s third goal just 32 seconds in.  Settling down the Flyers effectively killed the 2 minute balance of the penalty with face off wins by Chase Dobranski and Nathan Brown, and clears by A.J Wensley, Darren Turner. Logan McDonell came out of the penalty box charged down the ice and unleashed a wicked wrister that hit the post/crossbar. Damn it!

Determined to make a game of it, the Flyers continued their attack.  A face-off win by Alcock, a pass from Lee to Brad Bienvenu.  Near miss.  Another face-off win, this time by Nathan Brown to Troy Dumais to Darren Turner whose made a precision pass from behind the net to Adam Wensley.  Dryden’s Goaltender Curtis Barker squeezed the pads to make the save. Then Kevin Burton breaks away to score top shelf assisted by Jon Mitchell.  But there is no quit in the Sioux Lookout Flyers.

Dwight Lee again man of the moment provides the spark that lights the fire as he roofs it from two feet in front of the net, at 9:56 in the second frame assisted by Ian Alcock and Darren Turner. The play originated with Ian’s hard work along the boards.  As play resumes, Adam Wensley dishes out a big hit on Hansen.  TIMBER!   Sioux Lookout’s Nelson Rosiak follows up with a resounding hit on Spencer Gyori!  Now the crowd is really into it. Alex Beaulne is in the thick of it as Flyers scrum in front of the Dryden cage.

Flyer’s  sniper Adam Wensley flips the puck through the five hole on passes from Chase Dobranski and Brad Bienvenu for Sioux’s second tally.  The crowd cheers.  Flyer’s Goaltender, Peter Emery preserves the momentum as he makes two big saves one a point blank stop on Dryden’s #10 Mike Lennon.  The Flyers have fought back in the second period out shooting the opposition 12 -7. Score after two 4-2  This would set the stage for a classic barn burner of a third period.

Intensity rises in the third as the Flyers press the attack and Dryden sacrifices the body to block shots in a game that supposedly doesn’t really count.  Oh it counts all right. In the pride department.  In one sequence Sioux’s Nathan Brown wins the face off and he and Clayton Lewis pass back and forth three times as the rush down the ice.  Dryden’s Kevin Burton responds with a poster.  Darren Turner’s shot from the left circle is smothered by a diving Ice Dog.  At 7:38 at even strength,  Dryden’s fifth goal comes from the stick of Chad Liley on a pass from Jon Mitchell.

Flyers strike back with Vadnais in the box for interference. A.J. Wensley’s blast from the top of the left circle beat Barker. He was assisted by Darren Turner.  Clayton Lewis works hard, threads his way through the neutral zone and passes to Adam Wensley who buries the puck for Sioux Lookout’s fourth goal. The score is 5-4.  Ladies and Gentlemen we have ourselves a barn burner!

In a glorious moment for the Flyer’s franchise, and the young rookie Alex Beaulne, he takes a pass from Chase Dobranski, and Troy Dumais to tally the equalizer sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy. WOOO HOOO! The Flyers have tied the game in an amazing display of courage and determination.  Unfortunately, Dryden would counter as B. J. McClellan, assisted by Chad Liley slid the puck past Peter Emery.

More dramatic play from the Flyers. With 3:18 left they pressed the attack as Matyjanka and Beaulne drove to the net.  Penalty to Dryden’s Kevin Burton who was all over Alex Beaulne in the slot-the young forward now drawing a lot of attention. The Flyers continued to cycle the puck searching for the equalizer as Dwight Lee spun and attempted the back hand shot. Penalty to Flyer’s Darren Turner for elbowing. 1:14 left on the clock.  Flyers pull the goalie for the extra attacker.  Dryden’s shot misses an empty net.  Icing Dryden.

Time out Flyers.  45.9 seconds remain. Chase Dobranski wins the face-off in the Dryden Zone. A.J. Wensley unleashes a shot on net. Galen Matyjanka –another shot on net.  Dryden’s shot from the neutral zone slides past the Flyer’s empty net.

B.J McClellan’s second tally would prove to be the game winner for the Ice Dogs in regulation time.

Final Score Dryden Ice Dogs 6 Sioux Lookout Flyers 5

The Flyers had out shot the Ice Dogs in the third period by a wide margin of 22 to 10. This display of character and a great gritty comeback by the Flyers creates momentum going into the semi-finals.

March 10, 2010    M. Morin, Staff Writer

As the round robin unfolds, individual Flyers such as Clayton Lewis, Darren Turner and Chase Dobranski stepped up to improve their game.  Last night’s game at the Memorial Arena in Sioux Lookout remained close through the first two periods. The North Stars capitalized on some defensive lapses scoring twice early in the third. However, the Flyers valiantly strived to rectify the two goal deficit engineering some good rushes. North Stars Goal Tender Guillaume Piché withstood the pressure.

Following the splendid rendition of O Canada by Suzanne Favot, Flyer’s centre Chase Dobranski got down to work winning face-offs and a great open ice hit that sent his opponent flying. The Flyers continued to establish their  physical presence early in the game by signature hits by Nelson Rosiak and Captain Logan McDonnel. The visiting North Stars responded with good hits by Trevor Gamache on Dobranski, and Riley Marsh on Darnell Ferland.

Ryan Pearson opened the scoring for the North Stars at 5:29 with a power play goal, a high well placed wrister from the slot that beat Flyer’s Goalie Peter Emery high glove side.  Flyer’s Darren Turner came close as he stole the puck and streaked in unleashing a blast on net that gave Piché trouble and dribbled past him but stopped this side of the line. Peter Emery’s save on a sizzler by Kyle Breukelman  and a point blank stop in close kept the game within reach.

A great PK occurred with Dwight Lee in the sin bin.  Flyer’s Nathan Brown opened with a great check along the boards and cleared the puck. Next it was Galen Matyjanka who blunted the North Stars offense with a clear.  As Brad Bienvenu gained possession he raced down the ice….  Off side.  Good kill Flyers!

Fans witnessed exciting action in the final minutes of the First.  With Dan Usiski in the box for roughing and Casey Dean in for too many men on the ice the Flyers pressed 5 on 3.  First there was a spectacular pad save by Guillaume Piché, on a great Flyer’s east-west passing play.  Then Galen Matyjanka scored from Clayton Lewis and Chase Dobranski.  Score tied at 1-1

Action continued in the second frame as following another Dobranski face-off win, Galen Matyjanka and Colten Brulé would earn a good chance short side. Unfortunately with North Star’s Henley off for interference at the 1:23 mark the Flyer’s Power play would struggle to get pucks on net. Peter Emery would stymie the North Star’s short handed counter attack with two big saves. Even strength a failed clearing attempt resulted in the visiting Thunder Bay Team’s second goal scored by Ryan Pearson.

Flyer’s flying defenseman Clayton Lewis pressed for the equalizer as he skated coast to coast and launched a disk missile from the slot.  Glove Save Piché. Next a frantic rush by Nathan Brown and Darren Turner.  With North Star’s defenseman Randall Hanlan penalized for holding at 7:38 the Flyers unleashed a barrage.  A.J. Wensley: Shot from the point. Darnell Ferland: Another shot from the point-other side. Clayton Lewis: Shot on net. Patented #72 A.J. Wensley hit on #71 Sam Dubinsky streaking in along the boards. The second period would end with the Flyer’s on the penalty kill with Lewis on the box for roughing.  Score 2-1 Game still close and winable.

The North Stars put the jets on early in the third with two quick goals that seemed to catch the Flyers on their heels.  The visitor’s Travis Savard assisted by Breukelman and Usiski struck 55 seconds in with a low shot that eluded Emery’s glove low to the right side. At 2:51 Kyle Breukelman scored from Trevor Gamache.  Flyers switch goalies as Jordan Giguêre takes up duties between the pipes.

Flyers step up physical play with Brown’s hit on Forbes and Rosiak’s hit on Hanlan.  Darren Turner zooms in across the blue line…off side.  Flyers do not find the back of the net on the power play.  The crowd was ignited as Turner bore down on the net like a CN Freight Train.  His high blast from the top of the circle beat Piché to the right. Score Flyers 2 North Stars 4. Could the Flyers overcome the potent Stars two goal advantage?  They certainly would try.

Gigi save on howitzer from blue line. Then the Flyer’s offense took over.  Nathan Brown splits the “D”: Shot on net.  Good hustle and quick pass from behind the net by Turner…no cash!  Flyers press on a rush led by Alex Beaulne.  Piché down.  Colten Brulé attempts top shelf.  Shoots over net.  6:44 remaining.  Passing sequence leads to shot on net.

3:00 minutes left.  #19 Matyjanka rushes net.  Bienvenu, Lee, and Dumais great rush on net-great chance.  Time out Flyers with 1:35 remaining.  As the clock ticked down Flyers try to set up Adam Wensley with the long pass but the Stars plugged the neutral zone effectively.

The Flyers pressed the issue till the very end, ruling the second half of the period. They will regroup and see action versus the Dryden Ice Dogs at home on Saturday.

ICE DOGS-3 FLYERS-1
SIXTY MINUTES OF INTENSE PLAYOFF ACTION
M. Morin, Staff Writer,
March 3, 2010

The first post season game was certainly not lacking in hard work and intensity from both the Sioux Lookout Flyers and the Dryden Ice Dogs this evening. The Orange and Black stayed very close to their northern rivals for the first two periods before a crucial shorthanded tally in the third period gave the Ice Dogs a big boost. Gritty Flyers forward Adam Wensley stepped up with an impressive performance that was equal parts skill and physicality.

The Flyers began the opening frame with crisp passing from Clayton Lewis and Dwight Lee in pursuit of the all important first goal of the game. After penalties to Logan McDonell for holding the stick and Josh Baker for interference the fans in attendance were treated to some exciting four on four action with a save by Sioux Lookout net minder Peter Emery on a high shot and a speedy rush by Clayton Lewis. With Darnell Ferland in the sin bin for slashing at the 4:35 mark the Ice Dogs headed to the power play  looking to take a 1-0 lead. The Flyers penalty killing unit sprung into action with clears by A. J. Wensley, Darren Turner, and Peyton Hutchinson. Hard working Sioux Lookout forward Colten Brulé also was stellar on the PK stealing the puck from an opposition player.

The Flyers then found themselves down two men for 36 seconds with A.J. Wensley getting sent off for cross checking 5:59 into the period. The penalty killing crew stayed strong however with Darren Turner putting a long shot on goal and a steal by Galen Matyjanka which helped Sioux Lookout kill off the infraction. Flyer’s goal tender Peter Emery also came up big with a glove save on star Ice Dog’s forward Kyle Heck. The Dryden offense struck on the man advantage with Ben McClellan dishing the puck from behind the net to skilled defenseman Tanner Harms who made no mistake lighting the lamp to give Dryden a 1-0 lead at the 14:25 mark.

It was not long before the Flyers knotted the game at one with dangerous Sioux Lookout forward Adam Wensley turning on the red light assisted by Dwight Lee and Clayton Lewis 16:27 into the stanza. Score 1-1 after one period of play.

The second frame began with Dryden net minder Josh Baker making a save on a high drive to keep the score tied at one. After a speedy rush by high flying Dryden blue liner Jon Mitchell gritty Flyer’s forward Adam Wensley stepped into the high scoring defenseman with a heavy duty open ice body check. At 1:09 into the period, the Flyers went on the man advantage with Ben McClellan getting whistled for hooking. The Ice Dogs penalty killing crew went to work killing off the infraction with clears by Mike Lennon and B.J. McClellan.

The Ice Dogs pulled ahead 2-1 on a power play marker by B.J. McClellan assisted by Ben McClellan at the 3:45 mark. With  Dryden forward Spencer Gyori off for interference the Flyers headed to the power play. After a speedy rush and some good stick handling by sniper Chase Dobranski  Sioux Lookout goalie Peter Emery came up with a big save on a shorthanded breakaway by the skilled Ice Dogs squad. Dryden forward Kevin Burton was also a factor blocking a shot to help the Ice Dogs kill off the infraction. Star Sioux Lookout defenseman Clayton Lewis continued  his excellent play for the Orange and Black  winning a battle for the puck  and passing it to Alex Beaulne who came hurtling toward the Dryden net letting loose with a blast that went wide.

The Flyers had a chance to take the lead with the Ice Dogs heading to the box twice in a span of two minutes and twenty four seconds but Dryden did a good job blocking shots and clearing the puck out of their zone preventing the Flyers from tying the game. With Flyers defenseman Troy Dumais receiving five minutes and a game misconduct for high sticking with 19 seconds remaining Sioux Lookout needed a big performance from their penalty killing unit to remain within striking distance. Score 2-1 Ice Dogs after two periods.

The Ice Dogs came storming out of the gate to begin the final period but Flyers goaltender Peter Emery was a brick wall making three saves down low to keep it a one goal game. Galen Matyjanka, Colten Brulé, and Brad Bienvenu all did a good job clearing the puck out of  harms way. With 1:47 left in the penalty steady Sioux Lookout defenseman Kalan Ewald drew a tripping penalty on Dryden forward Spencer Gyori.

The Ice Dogs took command with the insurance goal at the 5:01 mark. In a heads up play Ice Dogs sniper Kyle Heck intercepted a pass and earned a huge goal for the home team turning on the red light with a high shot on a shorthanded breakaway to give Dryden a 3-1 lead.

The Flyer’s headed to the power play 11:40 into the period with Brendan Church in the sin bin for a hit to the head. Sioux Lookout power forward Darren Turner was a factor driving hard to the net but Dryden killed the penalty with saves from Josh Baker.

Undaunted, the Flyers continued the drive to the net with an extra attacker in the final minutes. In an exciting finish, the disk was briskly passed east and west ending up in the Dryden net a mere millisecond after the buzzer sounded.  Final score Ice Dogs 3 Flyers 1.

This game had the hallmarks of a play off opener with close checking, good goal tending and blocked shots by both Teams.  Flyer’s forward Adam Wensley led the charge on the offense, while Clayton Lewis set the pace for the defense.

FLYERS-4 LAKERS-2

FLYERS CLIMB WALL OF WORRY TO WIN
AN EXCITING FINISH TO THE REGULAR SEASON

M. Morin, Staff Writer, February 26, 2010

The Sioux Lookout Flyers emerged victorious last night at the Memorial Arena.  But  if you’re like me you were worried about that game. The performance of the Goal tenders and Special Teams at both ends of the ice were important factors in the contest. However the Flyer’s determined play earned them the win which created forward momentum for the playoffs.  The Fort Frances Lakers were also looking to head into the post season on a winning note. This resulted in another close, hard fought contest between these two rivals. Hometown fans were on the edge of their seats as the game was up for grabs until late in the third period.

Storming out of the gates just 54 seconds in, Flyer’s forwards Nathan Brown, Darren Turner and Adam Wensley seized control of the game, combining for the Flyer’s first goal. A high shot from the stick of Brown screamed past the Laker’s net minder Jameson Shortreed. The crucial first step had been taken. The Flyers then stepped up their physical play with a big hit  by Captain Logan McDonell which  fired up the home crowd.

At the 2:35 mark the Flyers headed to the power play with Mario Boivin getting whistled for high sticking. Laker’s forward Cody Edwards was solid on the penalty kill clearing the puck out of the Fort Frances zone. But the trio of Adam Wensley, Darren Turner, and Nathan Brown were on a roll. Adam put the Flyers up 2-0 receiving a crisp pass from Darren Turner and snapping it into the net. He was also assisted on the goal by Nathan Brown. Fort Frances went on the power play with Brad Bienvenu going off for interference 3:58 into the first stanza. Flyer’s player of the week Troy Dumais cleared the puck out of the Flyer’s zone and was a physical presence during the penalty kill and along with saves from Sioux Lookout goaltender Peter Emery and a clear from Nathan Brown the Flyers killed off the penalty.

The Lakers power play unit went to work again at the 10:32 mark with Logan McDonell being sent off for high sticking. Sioux Lookout nullified the man advantage with clears by Nathan Brown and Galen Matyjanka as well as hits by Brad Bienvenu and Ian Alcock. It was then the Lakers turn to come up with a good performance on the penalty kill with a scoring chance by Cody Edwards and a big save by Jameson Shortreed on a high blast. Score 2-0 Flyers after one. Shots on net 13-3 for the Flyers.

Sioux Lookout began the second period with scoring chances by Darren Turner and Dwight Lee with the latter being a blast on net that nearly got through the five hole. Flyer’s net minder Peter Emery responded by stopping the Lakers on the counter attack. Lakers forward Byron Katapaytuk pulled Fort Frances within one at the 2:42 mark putting in a high shot off a rebound. He was assisted on the goal by Mike Jourdain and Morgan McNeill. The Flyer’s responded  with a speedy rush by Galen Matyjanka and a high drive by Logan McDonell which forced Lakers goaltender Jameson Shortreed to make a difficult glove save. Now we had ourselves a game.

Hard working Flyer’s forward Alex Beaulne increased the intensity of the game dishing out a hit on Laker’s blue liner Josh Scott. After a good defensive play by Colten Brulé and a nice passing sequence by Ian Alcock and Brad Bienvenu, the Lakers went on the power play with Ian Alcock getting sent off for high sticking 8:12 into the middle frame. The Flyer’s penalty killing unit again came up big with Chase Dobranski keeping the puck in the Lakers zone, Darren Turner intercepting a pass,  and clears by Colten Brulé and Kalan Ewald.  The score was still too close for comfort.

Would the Flyers open up a desired two goal lead?  Opportunity arose at the 16:12 mark of the second with Jordan Carne in the sin bin for interference.  The Flyers power play pressed the attack and unleashed some heavy duty shots but Fort Frances goaltender Jameson Shortreed was like a magnet to the puck, denying the insurance goal.  Score 2-1 Sioux Lookout after two periods.  Shots on net 15-11 in favour of the home Team.

Initially, the Fort Frances Lakers came out with a jump in their step to begin the third period looking to tie the contest. Star Flyer’s net minder Peter Emery was up to the task however making a blocker save on skilled forward Byron Katapaytuk. At the 4:15 mark the Lakers had a chance to tie the game at two heading to the man advantage with Ian Alcock going to the box for cross checking.

The blue line duo of Kalan Ewald and A.J. Wensley were stellar clearing the puck out of the Flyer’s zone two times each. Galen Matyjanka and Colten Brulé also moved the puck out of the Flyer’s zone. Flyer’s defenseman Troy Dumais  then stepped up with some good work in the corners. Good Kill!  Everybody breathed a sigh of relief.

Peter Emery came up with one of the best saves of the Flyer’s season robbing dangerous  forward  Tyler Stevenson on a two on one rush to keep the score at 2-1 for Sioux Lookout.

The Lakers knotted the game at two with a slap shot from the point by Justin Erhart that trickled in. He was assisted on the play by Tyler Stevenson and Morgan McNeill.  Were we worried?  You bet.

With the game on the line, veteran Flyer’s defenseman Clayton Lewis shifts into high gear. His power play goal with 2:51 left in the final frame electrified the crowd! Flyers lead 3-2. He was assisted by another veteran blue liner A.J. Wensley. But this game is far from over.

Clayton Lewis dishes out a hit on dangerous Laker’s forward Byron Katapaytuk. Play resumes and as the Laker’s gain possession Shortreed leaves the net. The Lakers threaten in the offensive zone.  The Flyers regain possession.  The long shot from centre on the empty Laker’s net slowly grinds its way as Nathan Brown races like mad to deflect it in.  He is a millisecond late as the disk bounces off the post.  Icing.

Face-off in the Flyer’s zone.  As Flyer’s forward Darren Turner shoots a high wrister from the blue line into an empty net he cements the victory with eleven seconds remaining. Final score 4-2 for the Flyers.

It was an exciting end to what has been a memorable regular season by the Sioux Lookout Flyers with the team finishing in third place.

The Orange and Black will now prepare for the first round of the SIJHL playoffs.  Beginning next week there is a round robin tournament between the top three teams with the winner getting to choose which team they play in the semi-finals.

 The three Stars were:

 1.    Clayton Lewis       2.    Adam Wensley3.    Darren Turner

Skating with the Flyers

The Grade 4 class from Sacred Heart School was booked to skate at the Rec Centre one day last week and, like the last time, they were told they were unable to skate because of the same issue of being double booked, but a very persistant mother (Linda Skuse) was not going to have them go back to the school disappointed for something that was not their fault. She went and spoke to Sioux Flyers Couch Randy Lulashnyk and with teamwork shared their ice time. The whole Flyers team made the Grade 4 class so incredibly happy that they will be talking parents’ ears off for weeks. After the Flyers played a number of rounds of British Bull Dog with the students they also helped them take their skates off. Even the coach was right there to lend a hand. I would like to thank Randy Lulashnyk as well as all the Sioux Flyers for making the Grade 4 class as happy as they did.

ICE DOGS-5 FLYERS-2
OFFENSE VS DEFENSE: SPECIAL TEAMS SHINE

M. Morin Staff Writer,  February, 18, 2010

The Dryden Ice Dogs came charging out of the gate tonight using their speed and skill to create many scoring chances. After a slow start the Flyers found their legs resulting in the team out shooting Dryden in the second and third period. However the Ice Dogs kept on coming and did not let the Flyers get the forward momentum necessary to engineer a big comeback. It was a case of offense against defense with the high octane Ice Dogs  attack against the Flyer’s solid, hard working penalty killing crew.

The Ice Dogs got off to a quick start with forward Spencer Gyori trying to stuff it in on a wraparound. Brendan Church  then opened the scoring jamming in the rebound at 3:49 into the first period. The two teams exchanged speedy rushes into the offensive zone from Jon Mitchell and Adam Wensley. Dryden sniper Chad Liley motored into the Flyers end and launched a high shot on Sioux Lookout goaltender Peter Emery. Liley then scored on his own rebound at the 5:29 mark to give Dryden a 2-0 lead. He was assisted on the play by defenseman Conner Foster.  Jordan Giguère took over in net for the Flyers.

Sioux Lookout began to catch fire with a big hit by Brad Bienvenu and a nice save by Jordan Giguère in the Flyer’s cage. Logan McDonell and Chase Dobranski hit overdrive and stormed into the Dryden zone on a two on one break narrowly missing making it a one goal game. Flyer’s sharp shooter Adam Wensley darted into the offensive zone made a quick deke to out play the goal tender but could not cash on the play. Sioux Lookout blue liner Troy Dumais stepped up with a solid defensive play on dangerous forward Mike Lennon keeping the score at 2-0 Dryden. The Flyers headed to the power play 10:07 into the period with Kevin Burton getting whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite a slick passing play by A.J. Wensley and Nathan Brown, Dryden efficiently snuffed out the man advantage. Jordan Giguère stood tall in the Flyers net  turning away a relentless Ice Dogs attack with two point blank saves. Looking to increase their lead, Dryden twice went on the power play in the last six minutes of the first.

The Flyer’s penalty killing unit responded well nullifying both infractions.  Peyton Hutchinson and Clayton Lewis  effectively cleared the puck out of the Flyer’s zone and Goal Tender Jordan Giguère stood tall in the net. Veteran defenseman A.J. Wensley was a physical presence  with hits on B.J. McClellan and Brendan Wertanen. Score 2-0 Ice Dogs after one period.

The Flyers began the second stanza with one minute left in the boarding penalty to Troy Dumais. Sioux Lookout killed it off but only two seconds after the teams returned to five on five play explosive forward Kyle Heck took a pass from the boards and batted it in past Giguère with assists going to Kevin Burton and Tanner Harms to give the Ice Dogs a 3-0 advantage. Ice Dogs forward Brendan Wertanen followed that up with a speedy rush into the Flyers end. The intensity increased with Ice Dogs captain Jon Mitchell coming up with a heavy hit on Flyers forward Galen Matyjanka. Sioux Lookout answered back with Alex Beaulne dishing out a hit on Dryden defenseman Andrew Hansen.

Soon thereafter the Orange and Black got on the board with Nelson Rosiak lighting the lamp at the 4:01 mark assisted by Nathan Brown and Alex Beaulne. Dryden headed to the man advantage with Darnell Ferland going off for tripping. Just sixteen seconds later the five on four became a five on three with A.J. Wensley getting whistled for roughing after the whistle. The Flyer’s Special Teams again came up big killing the infraction with clears by Brad Bienvenu and Ian Alcock as well as Colten Brulé stealing the puck and getting a short handed chance.

The Ice Dogs got another crack at it 14:42 into the period with Darren Turner going off for slashing. Once more, Sioux Lookout’s P.K. Unit nullified the Ice Dog’s power play. Stepping up with hard work were: Peyton Hutchinson and Ian Alcock, as well as a shot block from Colten Brulé and backed by good saves from Jordan Giguère. It was then Josh Baker’s turn to shine making a glove save on Adam Wensley and turning away a blast by Peyton Hutchinson.

The final two minutes of the second frame saw the two squads trade goals with blue liner Mark McDonald blasting in a shot along the ice and Flyer’s defenseman Clayton Lewis earning a memorable tally. He zoomed into the Ice Dog’s zone deked two players and then flipped a backhand shot past Josh Baker in the Dryden crease. He was assisted on the play by Troy Dumais and Alex Beaulne who notched his second helper of the game. Score after two periods 4-2 for the Ice Dogs.

Penalty problems plagued the Flyers in the Third frame. The stalwart Special Teams again were stellar killing off a five on three with big saves by Jordan Giguère and good defensive plays by Nathan Brown and Kalan Ewald. Skilled forward Kyle Heck earned his second goal, an even strength tally, by going top shelf to give Dryden a 5-2 lead.

Ice Dogs net minder Josh Baker put in an excellent performance in the final period stopping a two on one break by Nathan Brown and Adam Wensley as well as making several saves on hard shots  by A.J. Wensley and Darnell Ferland during a five on three advantage for Sioux Lookout. Final score 5-2 for the Ice Dogs.

It was a hard working effort by the Flyers which was displayed by the shots on goal which were close. Dryden’s drive to the offensive zone prevailed however as they kept going to the net during the entire game.  Next on the schedule for the Flyers is their regular season finale at home against the Fort Frances Lakers on February 26th  at 7:30 pm.

A bad case of déjà vu hit Sioux Lookout Flyers fans February 10 when the hometown Flyers took on the visiting Fort Frances Lakers. Following a closely played first period, the score was tied 1 - 1.

The Flyers dominated the last half of the second period adding two more goals to their tally for a score of 3- 1.

Things fell apart for the Flyers in the third period. The Lakers scored two goals about five minutes into the period to tie the game at 3 - 3.

The Flyers fought back to regain the lead shortly after, courtesy of Dwight Lee, to make the score 4 - 3. But in the dying minutes of the period the Lakers surged and Jordan Carne scored for the Lakers to tie the game 4 - 4.

With less than two minutes left the Flyers were called for an elbowing penalty which set the Lakers up for Jordan Carne's winning goal, giving the Lakers the 5 - 4 victory. The last time the Flyers hosted the Lakers they also led into the dying minutes of the third period, having come from behind to take the lead, only to have victory stolen away from them. The Lakers pulled their goalie that game for the extra attacker.

The Flyers missed a chance to score on an empty net, and the Lakers scored with one second left to tie the game and force overtime, in which they scored to win 5 - 4 about 30 seconds in. Flyers Head Coach/GM Randy Lulashnyk said in the dying minutes of both games his team panicked and that's something only experience will remedy. "It's no different than working on steel buildings and having to walk the high steel. There's only so high you can go before you panic and that's where the learning takes over again." He commented on his team's performance in both games, "They played good hockey. They made good puck movements. They made good choices and when it comes down to the point of win or lose, win or lose, win or lose, I panic because I don't want to make a mistake."

Lulashnyk said his players can now learn from their experiences and be better able to deal with panic when the SIJHL play-offs start. "If we can stay consistent we'll be fine. Look at those games. There was a lot of adversity in each game. One game we were down 3 to 1. We came back and went ahead 4 - 3. They tied it. We never gave up. In esterday's game we were up 3 to 1. They came back and scored two goals. We should have folded but did we? No, we kept pressing, scored a goal. They disallowed it.

We should have really folded by then… we stayed calm, got through it and scored another one. It counted and when the pressure came on and the adversity set in, that's when everyone starts to panic. "There were a lot of spots they could have quit, but they never did. I think that these guys have to be noticed for where they are today… and recognize that other teams are growing too. I'm proud of them ya' know. We're just going to keep going." The Flyers final game of the regular season will be February 26 at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena, again against the Fort Frances Lakers. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

ICE DOGS-3 FLYERS-2
SATURDAY NIGHT SHOOTOUT THRILLER

February 13, 2010   M. Morin, Staff Writer

With the playoffs just around the corner all teams are committed to taking their game to the next level, to finding their top gear and hitting red line. This drive to raise their game along with both squads coming off a loss resulted in a close, exciting contest between these two rivals tonight at the Dryden Memorial Arena.

The first stanza got off to a fierce start with offsetting penalties to Justin Mongrain and Darren Turner for holding and roughing after the whistle just eight seconds into the first.  After quick rushes into the Dryden zone by Brad Bienvenu and Adam Wensley the Flyers headed to the power play with Mark McDonald going to the sin bin for high sticking at the 7:53 mark. Star Sioux Lookout defenseman A.J. Wensley zipped down the ice to bring it into the Dryden zone. Speedy Dryden sniper Kyle Heck responded by engineering  a short handed chance with Flyers goaltender Peter Emery standing his ground. A determined Ice Dogs team killed off the infraction. Sioux Lookout forwards Colten Brulé and Chase Dobranski stepped up with some solid defense with Brulé intercepting a pass and Dobranski halting an Ice Dogs attack at the blue line to keep Dryden off the score sheet. 9:27 into the opening frame Chase Dobranski zoomed into the Ice Dogs zone with a head of steam, split the defense and buried the puck past Dryden net minder Josh Baker to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. He was assisted on the play by Galen Matyjanka and Clayton Lewis.

The Flyers then got into penalty trouble in the second half of the period but the Sioux Lookout penalty killing unit came up with an inspired performance with short handed chances by Brad Bienvenu and Nathan Brown. Other big performances on the penalty kill were a two on one break by Darren Turner and Galen Matyjanka, a shot block by Turner and some big saves by Peter Emery. With Brendan Church in the box for hooking late in the first the Flyers had a chance to earn a 2-0 lead but the period ended with the score being 1-0 for the Flyers.

The second frame opened with Darren Turner taking the body and  Flyers net minder Peter Emery coming up with a big glove save. Turner then motored down the ice getting off a backhand shot which was stopped by Ice Dogs goaltender Josh Baker. Sioux Lookout went on their first man advantage of the second with Dryden forward Spencer Gyori getting whistled for roughing 4:38 into the period. Veteran Flyers forward Galen Matyjanka threatened to give Sioux Lookout a 2-0 lead with a great chance but was denied by Baker in the Dryden crease. Then it was Peter Emery’s turn to stand tall stymieing forward B.J. McClellan on a shorthanded chance by the Ice Dogs. The Flyers power play was negated at the 5:23 mark as Sioux Lookout forward Darnell Ferland headed to the penalty box  for tripping.

Flyers goaltender Peter Emery kept the dangerous Ice Dogs offense at bay with an impressive glove save on a shot from the circle. However the Dryden power play hit pay dirt with skilled defenseman Tanner Harms turning on the red light after receiving a slick pass from fellow Ice Dogs blue liner Jon Mitchell to tie the game at one with five seconds remaining in the Flyers infraction. Hard working Flyers forward Ian Alcock headed for the Dryden zone with speed and drew an interference penalty with Dryden’s top defenseman Jon Mitchell going the penalty box near the midway point of the period. Despite some good puck movement by the Flyers and speedy rushes by Troy Dumais and A.J. Wensley the Ice Dogs killed off the penalty with the score remaining 1-1. The Ice Dogs headed to the power play with Darren Turner getting five minutes and a game misconduct for elbowing. Sioux Lookout goalie Peter Emery made a save on a high blast but when the puck dropped Ice Dogs sniper Kevin Burton snapped it in for a power play marker with just four seconds left in the period. Score 2-1 Dryden after two periods of play.

The final period of regulation featured excellent defensive play from Flyers blue liner Troy Dumais, speed demon Nathan Brown racing into the offensive zone on several occasions, and Clayton Lewis blocking a dangerous long pass by the Ice Dogs. The Dryden penalty killing unit did a good job in the third killing off three infractions and Ice Dogs goaltender Josh Baker was solid in the Dryden cage.  With just under four minutes remaining, clutch Sioux Lookout forward  Darnell Ferland pounced tying the game at two which was met with a roar of approval from the Flyers fans in attendance. He was assisted on the play by Colten Brulé and Galen Matyjanka. Both teams then went on the attack with exciting end to end action. In the last minute of play in the period Sioux Lookout forward Nathan Brown was effective in the face off circle winning draws keeping Dryden from scoring and sending the game to overtime. Brown continued his stellar play in overtime moving the puck well, winning a face off, and generating a scoring chance  forcing Ice Dogs net minder Josh Baker to make an impressive poke check. Neither squad could find the back of the net in the extra frame so we were going to the final chapter of this memorable game the shootout!

Just like the first sixty five minutes of play the shootout was a close and hard fought  affair with sniper Chad Liley putting a slot through the five hole and  B.J. McClellan firing a shot off Emery’s shoulder and in. Flyers leading scorer A.J. Wensley tallied for Sioux Lookout deking Baker and then going top shelf. Final score Ice Dogs-3 Flyers-2. The Flyers had an honourable showing and did not quit despite being down a goal late in the third period.

Next up for the Orange and Black are two road games against the Fort Frances Lakers and the Dryden Ice Dogs on February 16th and 18th.

LAKERS-5 FLYERS-4

MOMENTUM SHIFTS GALORE IN OVERTIME CONTEST
February 6, 2010 M. Morin, Staff Writer

The pendulum of the season series between the Sioux Lookout Flyers and the Fort Frances Lakers has swung from tight defensive battles to wide open fire wagon hockey with lead changes. Tonight was the latter with Fort Frances in the lead during the first two periods before the Flyers stormed back to take the lead in the third. However a last second goal by the Lakers sent the game to overtime where Fort Frances notched a quick goal to emerge with the win in a fast paced back and fourth affair.

The Flyers began the first stanza with Shayne Kakegamic winning the opening faceoff which was followed by Flyers forward Darren Turner intercepting a Lakers pass in the neutral zone which resulted in a scoring chance that was stopped by Lakers net minder T.J. Pocock. The Flyers went on the powerplay with Cody Edwards getting sent off for high sticking at the 1:23 mark. Veteran defenseman AJ Wensley engineered a nice rush as well as a good pass and Adam Wensley had a scoring chance but T.J. Pocock made the save in the Lakers cage. Pocock came up with some more saves to help the Lakers kill off the infraction. After a glove save by Flyers goaltender Jordan Giguère and a speedy rush by Nathan Brown Lakers forward Justin Erhart notched the first goal of the contest on a wrister from the slot into the top right corner 8:18 into the period.

Soon after the Flyers penalty killing unit went to work with Colten Brulé getting whistled for interference.  Kalan Ewald and Galen Matyjanka were both able to clear the puck keeping the Lakers from taking a 2-0 lead. Nathan Brown and Clayton Lewis were also able to get the puck out of harm’s way but over half way into the powerplay the Lakers turned on the red light  with Blake Boaz scoring on a wraparound to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Lakers went on the powerplay  at the 12:30 mark with Shayne Kakegamic getting called for hooking. The Flyers killed  the penalty with hard work in the corners by Clayton Lewis and clears by Kalan Ewald and Darren Turner. The Lakers went on the man advantage again with Colten Brulé in the box for boarding but the Flyers came up with an inspired performance on the penalty kill. Galen Matyjanka intercepted a pass, Nathan Brown blocked a shot, and Jordan Giguère made a glove save to kill the penalty. Score 2-0 after one period of play.

The Flyers came out physical in the second frame with hits by Logan McDonell and Shayne Kakegamic which gave the Flyers  momentum. After a good rush by Colten Brulé Sioux Lookout forward Nathan Brown unleashed a bullet slap shot which beat Pocock to make it a one goal game at the 4:06 mark. He was assisted on the play by Adam Wensley. Using his blazing speed Nathan Brown went charging down the ice drawing a tripping penalty with Ryan Presthas going to the sin bin.

Sioux Lookout displayed good passing but were met with a determined Lakers  penalty killing unit which killed off the infraction. Flyers defenseman Peyton Hutchinson stepped up with some hard work in the second intercepting a clearing attempt and keeping the puck in the offensive zone. The Flyers had the crowd buzzing with a gorgeous long pass to Alex Beaulne who then dished it off to Adam Wensley who was hooked by Lakers defenseman Brett Williams sending the Flyers to the powerplay. Sioux Lookout was not able to find the back of the net so the score remained 2-1 Lakers. That changed with three minutes left in the second as Mike Jourdain earned the third Fort Frances goal to restore their two goal lead. Score 3-1 Fort Frances after two periods.

The Flyers got off to a quick start in the third period with a skilled passing play which led to a goal. Sioux Lookout forward Galen Matyjanka passed it to Dwight Lee who left a drop pass for Chase Dobranski who made no mistake turning on the red light at the 2:01 mark to pull the Flyers within one.  After a good rush by Sioux Lookout defenseman Mike Delvecchio the Lakers counter attacked forcing Jordan Giguère to come up with a quick poke check to keep the puck out of harm’s way. The save energized the Flyers and they went on the attack.  Just under three minutes later  dangerous forward Nathan Brown tipped a high shot to tie the game at three drawing thunderous applause from the crowd at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena. Adam Wensley and Darren Turner assisted on the play.

Building on the momemtum of his goal Nathan Brown screamed in on net but T.J. Pocock stood his ground making the save. This was followed by forays into the offensive zone by Dwight Lee and Nathan Brown. Dangerous Lakers forward Tyler Stevenson tested Flyers goalie Jordan Giguère with Jordan making the save. At the 6:51 mark Sioux Lookout was whistled for too many men on the ice with Mike Delvecchio serving the penalty. The Flyers did a good job killing the infraction with Peyton Hutchinson, Clayton Lewis, and Ian Alcock clearing the puck out of the Flyers zone.

It was then the Flyers turn to go on the man adavantage with Morgan McNeill going off for interference at the 9:05 mark. The Lakers  penalty killing unit came up big once again keeping the Flyers off the score sheet. At the 14:15 mark Flyers forward Logan McDonell gave Sioux Lookout its first lead of the game receiving a pass from Troy Dumais and putting it past Pocock. Forward Dwight Lee also assisted on the goal. This was followed up by a save from Giguère and an excellent rush by Darren Turner where he split the defense, got off a backhand shot but was stopped by Lakers net minder T.J. Pocock.  Jordan Giguère then came up with his best save of the night stopping Ryan Presthus on a breakaway. With the Lakers net empty late in the third  Lakers star forward Tyler Stevenson earned a buzzer beater scoring with one second left in the third period to tie the score at four and send the game to overtime.

The tying goal by Stevenson went right to the legs of the Lakers as they wasted little time with Ryan Presthus unleashing a wicked wrister which beat Giguère thirty seconds into the extra period. Final score 5-4 Lakers. The Flyers had a lead late but could not nail down the win with the hard working Lakers quickly erasing their deficit with some late game heroics.

These two teams will lock horns again on February 10th in Sioux Lookout in what will undoubtedly be another intense matchup.

SIOUX LOOKOUT FLYERS MONTHLY REVIEW:
JANUARY 2010
January 31, 2010   M. Morin, Staff Writer

It was a month of first’s for the Sioux Lookout Flyers in  January with the Orange and Black earning their first two victories against the powerful first place Fort William North Stars and their first shutout in franchise history.  The month would also see the first four points of a young forwards Junior “A” career and a significant acquisition at the trade deadline. January would not be without its trials and tribulations however as Sioux Lookout endured a four game losing skid.

The month began with a much anticipated home and home series between the Flyers and their arch rivals the Dryden Ice Dogs on January 2nd in Sioux Lookout and January 3rd in Dryden. On the 2nd,the Flyers and Ice Dogs headed into the first intermission with neither team able to get on the score sheet before Dryden took control of the game with two goals in the second stanza by Matthew Caulfield and Jon Mitchell. Dryden then rounded out the scoring with one goal in the third by Justin Lightfoot. Highlights for the Flyers during the game were a big hit by gritty forward Adam Wensley and the play of Chase Dobranski creating scoring chances and drawing a penalty.

The next evening in Dryden the Flyers came storming back with four straight goals to erase a 3-0 deficit before the Ice Dogs scored the last two goals of the game to prevail 5-4. Darren Turner led the way for the Flyers with a goal and an assist. Next up for the Flyers was a two game set against the Wisconsin Mustangs in Sioux Lookout on the sixth and seventh. The contest on the sixth was an exciting game with fire wagon offense, big hits, a three goal lead disappering, and a  young forward getting his name on the scoresheet for the first time. The first stanza featured the two teams trading punches offensively with the Flyers turning on the red light three times with goals by Darnell Ferland, Galen Matyjanka and Adam Wensley.

The Mustangs scored  twice on goals by Mike Baker and Nic Belonger. Flyers star forward Adam Wensley earned a highlight reel goal deking the Wisconsin defenseman, drawing the Mustangs goaltender Jon Mclean to the right, and then unleashing a high wrist shot into the net. It was a physical opening frame with thundering hits by Darren Turner, Mike Delvecchio, and AJ Wensley which energized the crowd at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena. Up and coming forward Alex Beaulne earned his first SIJHL point assisting on the Flyers second goal of the game by Galen Matyjanka. The second period had more exciting fire wagon offense with each team notching two goals and forward Alex Beaulne notching his first SIJHL goal just over a minute in.

The Mustangs then started galloping scoring twice on goals by Alex Riveness and Ian Jenson. Flyers star Galen Matyjanka  stepped up with an excellent display of hard work using his speed to win a race for the puck along the boards and then unleashed a hard wrist shot into the top right hand corner to give the Flyers a 5-4 lead at the 12:07 mark. A power play goal from AJ Wensley in the third period sewed up a 6-4 win for the home team. It was a memorable game for the Flyers and their fans on the seventh with goaltender Brett Timmerman recording the first shutout in franchise history making twenty four saves. Timmerman made some exciting glove saves and a big save on a two on one break by cutting down the angles.  Adam Wensley, Colten Brulé, and Darnell Ferland turned on the red light for the Orange and Black.

Vincent Vitale at the other end of the ice played a good game as well making some nice glove saves. The hit of the game belonged to Colten Brulé who slammed into a Mustangs player like an eighteen wheeler in an open ice body check.  Up next for the Flyers was a two game road trip with games against the K and A Wolverines on the twelfth and the league leading North Stars on the thirteenth. The final chapter of the season series between the Sioux Lookout Flyers and the K and A Wolverines was yet another intense, hard fought contest as many of the games between these fierce rivals have been. The final score was 3-2 for the Wolverines with veteran forward Darren Turner leading the way for the Flyers with two points. Aaron Ross had a good game for the Wolverines getting a goal and an assist. Superstar goaltender Peter Emery who the Flyers acquired at the trade deadline from the Dryden Ice Dogs played well making forty three saves. Emery also did not let the Wolverines get on the scoreboard until 6:42 into the second stanza. The next evening at the Fort William Gardens Peter Emery again made the opposition work hard to put the puck in the net keeping the red hot North Stars offense at bay until the 6:39 mark of the second frame when Dan Usiski found the back of the net to give Fort Willam the lead. After that goal The North Stars would turn it up a notch with the final score being 5-1. Trevor Gamache powered the Stars with three points on the night and hard working Nathan Brown tallied for Sioux Lookout. After 4-3 and 4-2 setbacks on the road against the Lakers and Ice Dogs on the 19th and 20th the Flyers headed back to Thunder Bay for two games against the league leading North Stars on the 22nd and 23rd.

The game on Friday was a classic shootout encounter which saw multiple shifts in momentum and great goaltending from net minders Peter Emery and Jamie Brattengeier. With both teams locked in a scoreless tie dangerous Fort William forward Ryan Pearson earned the games first goal late in the second stanza assisted by skilled newcomer Eli Halcrow. Trailing 1-0 impressive rookie Alex Beaulne notched a huge goal for the visiting Flyers early in the third frame to tie the game. The goal gave Sioux Lookout momentum as skilled forward  Darnell Ferland scored to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead just under three minutes later. The North Stars knotted the game at two with sniper Trevor Gamache turning on the red light which was the score after sixty minutes of hard work by both teams. Star Flyers goalie Peter Emery put in a stellar performance in overtime stopping all shots by the North Stars  to send this great game to a shootout!  Peter Emery did his part stopping Dustin Fummerton and Trevor Gamache. Adam Wensley and Galen Matyjanka scored to give the Flyers their first ever win over the Fort William North Stars.

Fort William   bounced back the next evening  earning a decisive 5-0 win. Deadly forward Trevor Gamache led the way for Fort William with four points during the game. The two squads then locked horns again in a two game set in Sioux Lookout the next Saturday and Sunday. The first game of the series featured great goaltending from Peter Emery and Guillaume Piché. Flyers forward Ian Alcock notched a highlight reel goal deking the defenseman and then going top shelf with a backhand shot. The North Stars broke a 1-1 tie in the third  with goals from Dustin Fummerton and Trevor Gamache to prevail 3-1.

On Sunday the Flyers struck back with a big 5-3 win which was the first ever win at home over the North Stars by Sioux Lookout. The Flyers were led by the inspired play of A.J. and Adam Wensley who both notched three points during the game. Darren Turner  earned a memorable tally when from his knees he shot the puck into the top of the net to give the Flyers a crucial two goal lead in a close third period. The power play was effective for Sioux Lookout capitilizing on penalty trouble by the North Stars. Flyers goaltender Jordan Giguère was excellent during the contest making some impressive saves including a stop on a breakaway by sniper Eli Halcrow. Leading the way for Fort William were Jordan Davis and Dustin Fummerton with two points each. This game brought an exciting end to the month of January for the Sioux Lookout Flyers and their fans.

The Flyers have taken their game to the next level with two wins in four games against the first place Fort William North Stars during January. Sioux Lookout will be looking to continue to improve in preparation for the playoffs which are fast approaching.

FLYERS-5 NORTH STARS-3

SIOUX STRIKES BACK TO TAKE SECOND GAME OF SERIES

January 31, 2010     M. Morin, Staff Writer

The Sioux Lookout Flyers celebrated their first home town victory against the league leading Fort William North Stars this evening. It was a team effort from the goalie out as the Flyers power play capitalized on the opposition’s penalty problems. The Flyer’s Special Teams were effective when called upon. The game also featured some exciting individual performances such as that of designated Captain Darren Turner, who played an inspired game along with the Wensley brothers who each earned three points. Flyer’s goaltender Jordan Giguère was solid in the net.

The North Stars got off to a quick start in the first stanza as Fort William sniper Dustin Fummerton scored at the 2:18 mark assisted by Ryan Magill and Jordan Davis. Sioux Lookout responded quickly with skilled forward Darnell Ferland unleashing a blistering shot, which turned on the red light tying the contest at one much to the delight of the team and their fans. Clinton Morris and  Adam Wensley assisted on the play. It would not be the last time that Darnell Ferland’s devastating shot would be felt by the opposition net minder during this game. Flyer’s forward Alex Beaulne then stepped up with some excellent work in the face-off circle wining two draws in a row.

The pace of the game turned up a notch on some good rushes from Chase Dobranski and Nathan Brown Sioux Lookout net minder Jordan Giguère was solid making a nice looking glove save. The North Stars soon found themselves facing a five on three disadvantage. The Fort William   special teams went to work and did a good job killing off the infractions. The Flyers power play unit would get another chance however with Adam Restoule and Dustin Fummerton in the box for boarding and interference at the 17:18 mark. Flyer’s star defenseman A. J. Wensley fired a heavy duty blast which got past Fort William goaltender Guillaume Piché at the 18:21 mark of the period to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. He was assisted on the play by Brad Bienvenu and Kalan Ewald. Jordan Giguère came up big again stopping dangerous sniper Dustin Fummerton with 27.2 seconds left in the first. Score 2-1 Flyers after one.

The North Stars began the second frame by killing off the remainder of a penalty. They then went on the attack jamming the net with skilled forward Eli Halcrow putting the puck past Giguère to tie the game at two. It was not long before the North Stars struck again on a classic passing play as Jordan Davis scored to the right of Giguère, who then promptly shut the door.

 A. J. Wensley scored on well placed wrister along the ice to tie the game with 3:14 remaining in the period.  Soon after, Adam Wensley tallied the go-ahead goal on a searing slap shot into the top right corner of the net.  He was assisted by, you guessed it, his brother A.J. and Nathan Brown.  In a wild and woolly period of hockey, the Flyers were now ahead 4-3.

Early in the third, Jordan Giguère stymied the Thunder Bay offense with good saves on the wrap-around attempt, and three consecutive saves down low to preserve the lead.  Continuing North Star penalty problems resulted in Darnell Ferland’s launching of two consecutive laser beam slap shots on the net. The second, a high blast, stunned Piché and play was stopped as the trainer attended to the Star’s net minder.  In possibly the best save of the night, Flyer’s tendy, Jordan Giguère stopped Eli Halcrow point blank on a break away.

Storming back the Flyer’s Darren Turner, from his knees, buried a Crosby-like high wrister past Piché. With 10:43 remaining in the game, would the Flyer’s hold the Fort to secure the win?

A crucial penalty kill ensued for the Flyers. Brad Bienvenu read the play well on the fore check, while Colten Brulé was a denizen of the neutral zone resulting in success for the special Teams.  With 6:03 left, Chase Dobranski, Nelson Rosiak and Darren Turner kept up the pressure resulting in a shot on net.  Subsequent to a bench penalty to the visitors, #21 Darren Turner, who played an inspired game, weaved into the offensive zone and shot on net. Quickly this was followed by a blistering blast on net by Nathan Brown.

The game ended fittingly on a save by Gigi on a shot from the blue line. Sioux Lookout fans savoured the victory of their Flyers as they in turn saluted them from centre ice.

The final score in regulation time was Flyers 5 North Stars 3 as this game entered the history books as the first ever win at home for the young Junior A franchise against the Fort William North Stars.  The hard earned Team victory as well as the victory against them in Thunder Bay on January 22nd , places the Flyers three points ahead of the fourth place Wolverines in the SIJHL standings.

A CLOSE CHECKING HARD FOUGHT CONTEST

January 30, 2010   M. Morin, Staff Writer

The Sioux Lookout Flyers put on their work boots and checked in for a hard fought contest at the Memorial Arena tonight giving the visiting North Stars a good run for their money.  Winning many face-offs and puck battles in the corners the close checking fast skating home town squad frequently had their opponents looking over their shoulders.  Both goalies played well.

The Flyers started with a good kill on a penalty to #52 Troy Dumais, on clearing shots by Kalan Ewald, Colten Brulé and Peyton Hutchinson. Flyer’s goal tender Peter Emery, contributed with a good save, the first of many, on a Stars blast from the circle.  Skating hard, the Flyers continued to find open ice on rushes by Brad Bienvenu, Adam Wensley, and Galen Matyjanka.  Brulé played a good two way game with an effective back check, as did A. J. Wensley.

The Flyer’s hard work in the corners was rewarded at 5:09 when they drew a penalty to Mitch Forbes for holding the stick. North Stars goal tender Guillaume Piché, stood tall stopping shots by A.J. Wensley and Brad Bienvenu, as well as a scrum in front of his net  Further, he would come up strong in a brief  5 on 3.  At the other end of the ice, Flyer’s goalie, Peter Emery calmly reciprocated with an amazing stop on Dustin Fummerton, with only seven seconds to go.  No score after one period. The first period belonged to Sioux as the shots tallied in at 14 to 9 in their favour.

The second frame was more of the same with tight checking, big hits and excellent goaltending from both net minders. The hits came from Kalan Ewald and Darren Turner with a big body check at centre ice. #4 for the Flyers Alex Beaulne showed good hustle getting a shot on goal and working hard in the corners. At the 8:41 mark the North Stars went to work on the power play with Shayne Kakegamic in the box for spearing.

A.J. Wensley and Chase Dobranski did a good job on the penalty kill getting chances to score but  North Stars sniper Jordan Davis turned on the red light  assisted by Ryan Pearson a little over a minute into the man advantage.

Just a few minutes later, the Flyers had an answer as hard working forward Ian Alcock gained possession and scored a highlight reel goal.  He deked the Fort William defenseman and then showing patience, he fired the puck top shelf on the backhand. Superstar goaltender Peter Emery then preserved the 1-1 tie making a very quick pad stop and a glove save as well. Sioux Lookout began to hem the North Stars in their own end in the latter stages of the second period but when Fort William got into the offensive zone Peter Emery was there making a huge pad stack save with thirty seven seconds left. Veteran forward Nathan Brown was excellent in the face off circle for the Flyers during the period contributing to the success of the team.  Score 1-1 after two periods of play.

The third period began with Adam Wensley and Nathan Brown engineering a speedy rush and Clayton Lewis working hard in the offensive zone. Galen Matyjanka and Chase Dobranski broke out on a two on one but Guillaume Piché stood tall in the North Stars cage. Kalan Ewald stepped into his man in open ice which had the crowd buzzing. Power forward Darren Turner then came up with the hit of the game slamming into his opponent like an eighteen wheeler.  In a bid to give Fort William the lead dangerous sniper Mitch Forbes unleashed a wicked high wrister from the slot but goaltender Peter Emery stood tall making the save.

The North Stars kept coming however and they were rewarded at the 13:37 mark when deadline acquisition Dustin Fummerton found the back of the net on a high wrister. He was assisted on the play by Ryan Magill.

There would be more excitement to follow.

On a speedy tic, tac, toe rush led by the Flyer’s fire brand Adam Wensley a shot on goal from close in resulted in the red light going on.  Woohoo! The Flyers had tied it up in dramatic fashion.  But wait. The crowd’s cheers turned to boos as the referee signaled no goal. After consultations with the linesmen, and the goal judge the call stood. No goal.

This gave the North Stars momentum which soon led to the North Stars third goal of the game off the stick of Trevor Gamache. Frustrations soon began to boil over as Flyer’s forward Logan McDonell bumped into North Stars goaltender Guillaume Piché. As a result, the Flyer’s Captain and Fort William defenseman Ryan Axsom dropped the gloves in a spirited tilt. Clayton Lewis and Dan Usiski went toe to toe not long after in another  scrap. Final score 3-1 North Stars.

It was definitely an excellent showing by the well conditioned Flyers tonight against the league leading Fort William squad. The Orange and Black gave the North Stars all they could handle consistently beating them to the puck from the face-off to the corners. The goal tending was great earning Peter Emery the nod as first star, and Guillaume Piché recognition as third star.  Dustin Fummerton was second star of the game.

These two teams will lock horns again on Sunday January 31st at 4:30 pm in what will undoubtedly be another exciting game so let’s cheer on our hard working never say die Sioux Lookout Flyers.

ICE DOGS-4 FLYERS-2

A TALE OF THREE PERIODS

January 20, 2010 M. Morin, Staff Writer

January 20th’s contest between the Sioux Lookout Flyers and the host Dryden Ice Dogs was a tale of three periods. In the first stanza the Flyers got off to a good start before the persistent Ice Dogs rebounded in the second. While Sioux Lookout attempted a rally in the final frame, penalties would play a role in the outcome. Newly acquired Flyer’s net minder, Peter Emery, played very well in his first game against his former team and rookie forward Alex Beaulne, continued to gain confidence at the Junior “A” level of play.

The Flyers applied early pressure to begin the first period with some shots on goal and good hits by Darren Turner and Clayton Lewis. A breakaway by Flyers forward Logan McDonell featured a backhand shot but he was whistled for goalie interference after bumping into Ice Dogs net minder Josh Baker. The Flyers killed off the penalty with Darren Turner blocking a shot, good defensive play by Brad Bienvenu, and good goaltending by Peter Emery in the Flyer’s cage. Sioux Lookout drew first blood with Nathan Brown turning on the red light at the 4:24 mark assisted by Colten Brulé and Darren Turner.

Sioux Lookout forward Dwight Lee threatened to put the Flyers up 2-0 when he executed a nice deke but Josh Baker made the save. That was followed by  hard hits from Flyer’s captain Logan McDonell and good defensive play by Clayton Lewis. The Flyers then fell into penalty trouble finding themselves down  five on three for 1:22. Flyers goalie Peter Emery came up with some big stops including a high save on dangerous sniper Kevin Burton and a highlight reel save on a wrap around. But the skilled Ice Dogs squad could not be held off the score sheet on the man advantage as Kyle Heck knotted the game at one with a low slider from the slot. He was assisted by Mike Lennon and Tanner Harms. In the latter stages of the first, it was Dryden’s turn to get into penalty trouble. Despite the Ice Dogs two infractions,  the period ended with the score 1-1.

The Flyers opened the second period with 1:10 of power play time but  were faced with a determined penalty killing effort by the Ice Dogs. Dryden cleared the puck out of their zone three times  preventing the Flyers from taking the lead. Again Flyers goaltender Peter Emery came up big stopping Brendan Church on a breakaway to keep the score deadlocked at one. Flyers forwards Nathan Brown and Colten Brulé engineered a pretty passing play but narrowly missed the net. This was followed by Logan McDonell unleashing a heavy shot which was stopped by Ice Dogs net minder Josh Baker. Alex Beaulne was effective in the corners winning battles for the puck.

Flyer’s goaltender Peter Emery made a big save  stopping  deadly Dryden forward Kyle Heck on a partial breakaway.  However the speedy Ice Dogs then began to take over as B. J. McClellan received a pass from behind the net and put it past Emery in the Flyers crease at the 13:45 mark. On a similar play, Dryden made it a 3-1 game  as Kyle Heck flipped the disk into the back of the net. The Flyers were down 3-1 after two periods but penalty killing was not an issue.  The Sioux Lookout special Teams had killed off four infractions in the second,  thanks to big saves by Emery, and hard work by Nathan Brown, Colten Brulé and Brad Bienvenu.

The Flyers began the third period with Nathan Brown winning the opening face off which led to two good rushes. With Darren Turner in the box for elbowing, the Ice Dogs went on the power play trying to increase their lead. The Flyers killed off the penalty with hard working  forward Ian Alcock blocking a shot, Galen Matyjanka and Clayton Lewis clearing the puck and Peter Emery making some big saves. However the Flyers again found themselves short handed with Peyton Hutchinson going to the sin bin for hooking at the 5:13 mark. Tanner Harms found the back of the net with assists going to Mike Lennon and Kyle Heck.

After a speedy rush by Troy Dumais the Flyers began to regain  momentum. Sioux Lookout forward Alex Beaulne had a good chance to notch the Flyers second goal of the contest with a hard wrister that Josh Baker stopped. After Flyer’s forward Chase Dobranski generated two good scoring chances, Ian Alcock -who has six points in his last six games -pulled  the Flyers within two at the 11:00 mark of the period. He was assisted on the play by A.J. Wensley and Galen Matyjanka.

Soon after the Ice Dogs counter attacked but Peter Emery stood tall making  two nice glove saves. Intense forward Nathan Brown came up with the biggest hit of the game catching all of Kyle Heck in a heavy duty body check as he entered the offensive zone.

Time out Flyers with 1:42 remaining.  The Flyers gain possession and  Flyer’s #4 Alex Beaulne jams the net.  Shot from the blue line from the stick of Kalan Ewald.  Pass from Nathan Brown to Darren Turner.  Shot on net. Glove save Baker….29 seconds left.  Blast on net from A.J. Wensley…labeled for the corner…. miraculously… Pad save Baker.

With nineteen seconds left in the game, Justin Lightfoot streaks out of the zone for Dryden.  He’s on a breakaway!  Flyer’s goaltender, Peter Emery, makes yet another impressive pad save on the deke attempt.

The final score was 4-2 Dryden in another entertaining contest between these regional rivals.

Up next for the Orange and Black is a two game set in Thunder Bay on January 22nd and 23rd against the first place Fort William North Stars.

FLYERS-3 MUSTANGS-0
TIMMERMAN EARNS FRANCHISES FIRST SHUTOUT

January 6, 2010 M. Morin, Staff Writer

Suzanne Favot sang a stirring rendition of both National Anthems.

The excellent play of Flyers goaltender, Brett Timmerman along with hard skating and hard hitting from his team mates powered the Sioux Lookout Flyers to an impressive 3-0 win over the Wisconsin Mustangs tonight in the second match of  the two game series. Red hot sniper Adam Wensley  made his presence felt once again skating crisply, generating offence and leading his Team to victory against the hard working opponents.

The game began with the Flyers pressuring the Mustangs in the offensive zone causing Wisconsin to ice the puck twice in the first few minutes of the period. Sioux Lookout forward Adam Wensley motored down the ice with a nice rush which resulted in the Flyers opening the scoring at the 15:57 mark. He was assisted by Darnell Ferland and Ian Alcock. Flyers goaltender Brett Timmerman stood tall in the Flyers cage making a point blank save on Nic Belonger. Not to be outdone Mustangs goalie Jeff Dunaisky came up with a big glove save on  A.J. Wensley after a nice looking tic, tac, toe passing play generated by the Flyers. With A.J. Wensley in the box for slashing the Mustangs went to work on the power play but were met with a determined Flyers penalty killing unit.

Looking for a short handed goal Colten Brulé darted into the Mustangs zone and  headed right for the net. Wisconsin goaltender Jeff Dunaisky was up to the task making the save. The Flyers killed off the rest of the power play with shot blocking, steady play by Kalan Ewald and good saves by Brett Timmerman including a quick pad save. Timmerman continued to be  a brick wall with a big stop on a wrap-around by Mustangs forward Charlie Price. Wisconsin had another chance to tie the game with Sioux Lookout forward Dwight getting whistled for  hooking. Kalan Ewald and Brett Timmerman again played a big role on the penalty kill with Ewald clearing the puck out of the Flyers zone and Timmerman making saves to keep the Mustangs off the score sheet. Flyers star Galen Matyjanka had a chance to put the Orange and Black up 2-0 with a shorthanded goal but Dunaisky was up the challenge making the save. Score 1-0 Sioux Lookout after one.

The Flyers began the second by killing off the remainder of the power play and then went on the attack with an excellent rush by the speedy Nathan Brown. Darnell Ferland who has been playing well this week dished out a hit and then had a good chance to score but just lost the handle in front of the net. Alex Beaulne kept the momentum going with a shot on net from the slot. Sioux Lookout sniper Colten Brulé gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead batting in a shot from the slot at the 15:05 mark assisted by  Nathan Brown and Dwight Lee. With the Mustangs hemmed in their own zone Wisconsin goaltender Jeff Dunaisky came up with an impressive glove save. The Mustangs then went on a power play as Mike Delvecchio sat in the sin bin for cross checking.

Sioux Lookout killed the penalty with  A.J. Wensley clearing the puck and Brett Timmerman making good saves down low.

The Flyers scored their third goal of the game on a shot by Darnell Ferland that hit the Mustang defenseman’s skate and went in the net. Ian Alcock and Adam Wensley assisted on the goal. Veteran Flyers defenseman A.J. Wensley then dished out a heavy duty hit which energized the crowd at the Memorial Arena. Brett Timmerman continued his stellar play making a big save on a two on one break for the Mustangs by cutting down the angles. Following A.J. Wensley’s lead, hard working Flyers forward Colten Brulé unleashed a huge open ice hit which had the crowd buzzing. The Flyers then went on a power play where they generated lots of shots on goal but Mustangs goaltender Jeff Dunaisky played well preventing Sioux Lookout from increasing their lead. Score 3-0 Flyers after two.

The third period began with both teams applying pressure in end to end action.  The Flyers tried to increase their lead and the Mustangs were looking to mount a come back. Flyer’s goalie Brett Timmerman stymied Wisconsin  forward Matt Keith who took a lead pass and tried to deke Timmerman in the Sioux Lookout crease.

Playing shorthanded, the blue line duo of Clayton Lewis and A.J. Wensley would shine doing a good job of clearing the puck out of the Flyer’s zone. Lewis also turned on the jets for an end to end rush. Defenseman Troy Dumais wound up and sent a big blast toward Wisconsin goaltender Jeff Dunaisky who flashed the leather in an entertaining save. In a battle of the net minders Brett Timmerman would respond by stopping the Mustangs on some well executed tic, tac, toe passing plays by the Wisconsin squad. Timmerman then flashed the leather to the delight of fans of  classic glove saves.

Flyer Alex Beaulne won several crucial face-offs in the third period.  Nathan Brown rang one off  the post on a centering pass from Brad Bienvenu.  Nelson Rosiak was also flying out there as he followed the shoot ins into the corners to take the man.

Excitement was building in the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena as Sioux Lookout net minder Brett Timmerman was getting closer and closer to becoming the first Flyer’s goaltender to record a shutout. Brett’s team mates were pouring on the pressure late in the game trying to help him notch the shutout.

With 2:20 left in the game, the crowd hushes as opposing centres face-off  to the left of Timmerman.  #11 Ian Jensen wins the face-off for the ‘Stangs. He passes back to #22 Dan Smith, who unleashes a searing shot on net. Glove save Timmerman. The Flyers counter-attack as Clayton Lewis drives a blast from the blue line. 1:08 remains.  The Flyers bottle the Mustangs in their own end.  One last drive by the Wisconsin squad is interrupted by Colten Brulé, who races down the ice. 21 seconds remain. After what felt like an eternity, the buzzer sounds.  The scoreboard reads 3-0 HOME !!

The crowd cheered enthusiastically as Brett was congratulated by his teammates in what was an exciting game for the team and fans. Colten Brulé was just flying out there.  Sioux Lookout forwards Adam Wensley and Ian Alcock were excellent in the two game series with Adam notching five points and Ian getting four.

The enthusiasm of the Wisconsin Mustangs for the game of hockey was evident as no matter what the score was they kept working and driving to the net. As they shook hands with the Flyers, at centre ice, the crowd gave them an appreciative cheer for their long trip up north to Sioux Lookout.

The Flyers will hit the road next week for a game against the K and A Wolverines on the 12th and a game against the first place Fort William North Stars on the 13th.

FLYERS-6 MUSTANGS-4
END TO END EXCITEMENT

January 6, 2010, M.Morin, Staff Writer

The Sioux Lookout Flyers and the Wisconsin Mustangs put on a really good show in an entertaining contest that featured fire wagon offense, big hits and leads that evaporated. This game also featured the first two points of a young forward’s  Junior “A” career.

The game began with Nathan Brown winning the opening face-off which set the tone for the Flyers offense to strike quickly. Darnell Ferland found the back of the net on a backhand shot just forty-five seconds into the first period. Adam Wensley and Ian Alcock assisted on the play. Nathan Brown used his blazing speed  to engineer an end to end rush into the Mustangs zone. Darnell Ferland and Adam Wensley had shots in close but Mustangs net minder Jon McLean stood tall in the Wisconsin cage.

The Mustangs tied the game at one with forward Mike Baker wristing in a rebound from in close at the 4:49 mark. Flyer’s forward Darren Turner stepped up with a big hit which would not be the last hit in this exciting game. Veteran Flyers forward Galen Matyjanka put the Orange and Black ahead 2-1 on a nice looking  wrap around tally put into the top of the net. Assisting on the goal were Logan McDonell and Alex Beaulne who earned his first SIJHL point. The Mustangs would prove to be a worthy opponent however as they passed the puck well and displayed a good transition game.

Wisconsin knotted the contest at two with forward Nic Belonger putting one in moments after Flyers net minder Jordan Giguère was run into. Flyers blueliners Mike Delvecchio and   SIJHL player of the month for December A.J. Wensley,  increased the intensity of the game with big hits which gave the Flyers momentum. Alex Beaulne  tested Mustangs net minder Jon McLean but the goalie made the save. At the 15:14 mark  Flyers sniper Adam Wensley earned an unassisted goal  picking up the puck, deking the Wisconsin defenseman, drawing the goalie to the right and wristing it high into the net. Score 3-2 Flyers after one.

Quickly the Flyers started  the second period with up and coming forward Alex Beaulne getting his first SIJHL goal just over a minute in. He was assisted by Galen Matyjanka and Troy Dumais. The Mustangs would then start galloping causing the Flyers to take penalties.  Forwards Brad Bienvenu and Nathan Brown worked hard on the penalty kill with Brad blocking a shot. Flyers net minder Jordan Giguère came up with a good glove save on the penalty kill as well. Alex Riveness made it a one goal game with a top shelf tally and then a little over a minute later Ian Jensen notched the equalizer on a shot from the circle assisted by Mike Fillippe  and Alex Riveness.

Brett Timmerman  took over in the Flyer’s net after the fourth Mustangs goal. Sioux Lookout Captain Logan McDonell was a physical presence unleashing two big hits.  The Flyers went on the power play 9:19 into the period with Grant Mindt going to the box for boarding, but the Mustangs killed off the penalty. Galen Matyjanka restored the Flyers lead with an excellent display of hard work turning on the jets and  winning  a race for the puck along the boards. In full flight, he then unleashed a hard wrist shot into the top right corner of the net past goalie Jon McLean. Flyers goalie, Brett Timmerman, played well during the second making some good saves  including some stops during a Mustangs power play  late in the period. Alex Beaulne was effective in the face-off circle for the Flyers.  Score 5-4 Sioux Lookout after two periods.

The Flyers went on the power play early in the third period and star defenseman A.J. Wensley would make no mistake unleashing a big blast from the top of the circle assisted by Ian Alcock and Adam Wensley to give Sioux Lookout a 6-4 lead. Reliable defenseman Kalan Ewald then came up with a courageous performance blocking a dangerous shot from the hash marks. That would be followed by good rush from Dwight Lee and Brad Bienvenu. Logan McDonell and Galen Matyjanka came storming into the Mustangs end on a two on one with McDonell’s shot missing the net by mere inches. After a good rush by Flyers forward Clinton Morris, the Mustangs Jake Olson rang one off the post. At the 15:06 mark of the third period Wisconsin would have a crucial five on three for one minute and nine seconds.  Time out Flyers.

Flyer’s A.J. Wensley gains possession and clears the puck.  Darren Turner screams in for a shot on net short handed. Brett Timmerman stymies the Wisconsin counter attack coming up big in the Flyer’s crease making some key saves including a nice looking pad save. Still smiling, Wisconsin ’s Defenseman # 11 Ian Jensen, was dogged on the puck in behind the net. However Flyer’s veteran defenseman, Kalan Ewald, with an effective poke check and control of the play, excelled defensively not allowing the Mustangs back into the game.

The crowd cheered as the final buzzer sounded. The Flyers had won a close hard fought game that had fire wagon offense, big hits and  a memorable performance by Flyers forward Alex Beaulne getting his first two SIJHL points. Flyer’s star forwards Adam Wensley and Galen Matyjanka both earned three points during the game including an unassisted goal by Adam and the game winner by Galen. Final score Flyers-6 Mustangs-4.

The Mustangs for their part  made a good accounting of themselves, with their neutral zone defense, a determined attack, crisp passes, and speedy play drawing penalties.  Bus Legs? What Bus Legs.

Tonight’s rematch between these two Teams promises to be equally exciting.

7: 30 at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena
